Digital Trade Openness: Brussels Launch of ECIPE’s Digital Trade Estimates

Digital trade is gaining increasing importance over the last years. Trade in digital goods, the provision of online services across borders, the movement of ICT professionals and cross-­border data flows are growing rapidly in the world economy. Moreover, companies rely heavily on the use of digital tools as part of their trade practices.

Less known is the extent to which restrictions apply in digital trade today. Therefore, ECIPE has launched the Digital Trade Estimates (DTE) project which the objective to shed light on bulk of measures which are affecting digital trade.

The project includes a database of measures in 13 different policy areas, including IPR, investment, online transactions and data flows, which have been identified for 65 economies. In addition, the DTE includes an index which attempts to quantify the cost of all these measures on digital trade.
