A United Nations summit last month set new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the world, aiming for a group of targets on poverty, health, growth, the environment and more to be reached by 2030.
The new goals follow on the heels of a remarkable period in world history when extreme poverty was reduced perhaps faster than ever before – and when the health and longevity of the world population improved more than few could imagine when the Millennium Development Goals were established in 2000. Expanding trade and globalisation were central to achieve these goals and, going forward, what contributions to the new SDGs should be expected from trade and trade reforms? Will trade be equally important for the new SDGs – and, if so, what is required in terms of new global reforms for greater trade and investment?
