With the Trump administration denouncing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) a disastrous deal, the renegotiation of one of the world’s largest trade agreements was not off for a good start. The past months of renegotiation have been rocky and after the fourth round of talks in October negotiations reached an impasse due to “significant conceptual gaps among the Parties”.

So what are the negotiating positions and the political dynamics that have led to this impasse? As the fifth round of negotiations takes place, what are the prospects for the US, Canada and Mexico moving forward in a meaningful way? What will be the implications for EU and global trade if the US withdraws from NAFTA?
