How to better understand populism and rejuvenate liberalism.
Polls suggest that populist parties are on course to gain a lot in the election to the European Parliament. Such parties even top the polls in some countries and show few signs of slowing down their disruption of Europe’s political landscape. Can liberalism fight back?
In a new book, Reviving Classical Liberalism Against Populism, professor Nils Karlson outlines a new way of thinking about liberalism and populism. Populism is a threat to open societies and open economies, to be sure. But liberals need to do a lot better job to revive liberalism and practice a liberal statecraft. Drawing on a vast body of research from a variety of disciplines, Karlson sketches a liberal spirit and narrative that are necessary to defend liberty in Europe.

REGISTERNils Karlson is a former professor of political science and founder (and former CEO) of the Ratio Institute, a research institute in Stockholm. A visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, between 2021 and 2023, professor Karlson is the author of numerous books and academic papers about subjects such as statecraft, economic reforms, labour markets and education.
