ECIPE Seminar: Healing Global Trade Rifts – What can be Done?

Global trade policy is under stress. The Trump Administration has broken with economic orthodoxy, ushered new protectionism into US trade policy, and threatened to slap more tariffs on old trade partners. Much as the Trump Administration is a disruptor, the health of global trade policy was weak already before President Trump was elected. Failures to conclude new global trade agreement at the WTO and the growth of new protectionism – not least on the heels of the financial crisis – have led to frictions and problems of making trade policy to reflect core developments in the world economy. What can be done to heal the trade rifts and address concerns – old and new – about growing protectionism.
