Migration is now at the centre of the European debate. But why, exactly, has migration – within the EU or to the EU – become so contested? While some argue that migrants “steal jobs” others complain that they live off the welfare state and is a fiscal burden – damned if you do, damned if you don’t”. But what is true – and what is not – about migration and its economic consequences?
You are cordially invited to a lunch seminar on migrant labour-market participation, the economic consequences of migration, and the rise of anti-immigration sentiments in Europe.
The seminar will have three presentations by Andreas Bergh, an assistant professor in economics at Lund University/Institute of Industrial Economics and author of a new ECIPE paper on migrant labour-market participation, Philippe Legrain, Principal Adviser and Head of Analysis at the European Commission’s Bureau of European Policy Advisers and author of Immigrants: Your Country Needs Them, and Heather Grabbe, Director of the Open Society European Policy Institute.
